MARK DAWSON OF CHAMBLEE, GEORGIA WINS A QUARTER MILLION DOLLAR GRAND PRIZE
ON JEOPARDY! TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
Dawson Joined Top Jeopardy! Players To Battle for New $250,000 Grand Prize
NEW YORK, NY, May 16, 2003 - Today, Mark Dawson from Chamblee, Georgia became the Grand Prize Champion of the prestigous Tournament of Champions on Jeopardy!. Fifteen of the country’s mental elite joined Dawson, 41, for a two-week tournament which showcased the quiz show’s top players of this and past seasons. Previously, Dawson won $52,599 in September 2001.
Dawson explains how he won the game, “I remain focused. I fall in the ballpark as a preparer, and you have to be ready to play because it takes everything you can bring to the table to win.”
Will being a quarter million Jeopardy! champion change his lifestyle much? “I don’t think about it too much,” he says, “but I find myself to be more relaxed in certain situations.” “I’ve always been pretty frugal, but every day that I see my corvette from my first win on the show in 2001, is a daily affirmation that I did well,” he jokes.
Dawson was joined by fellow Jeopardy! alumni including an actor, software engineer, college student, surgeon and playwright, to name a few. Prior to the 17th Annual Tournament of Champions, the fifteen contestants have cumulatively earned over $1 million in cash and prizes.
Dawson, who has watched Jeopardy! since he was five years old, is a Business Manager with CNNA. He studied Biology and International Business at Georgia State, where he holds a BS and an MBA. With his prize money, he plans to travel to Europe and Central America. While abroad, he hopes to take up Latin dance and learn new languages.
Jeopardy!’s Tournament of Champions featured dramatically increased cash winnings for the quiz show’s top season winners. For the first time ever, the grand prize for the prestigious two-week tournament was upped to $250,000 cash, with a minimum guarantee of $50,000 for second place and $25,000 for third place. The six players eliminated in semi-finals each pocket $10,000; players eliminated in the first round receive $5,000.
With a total of 21 Emmy awards since its debut in 1984, Jeopardy!, which was recently listed among “The Greatest Game Shows of All Time” by TV Guide, continues to be a ratings champion. The series is the #1-rated quiz show in syndication, and has held that title for over 1,000 weeks. It also has been the second highest-ranking series overall in syndication – beaten only by its companion series, Wheel of Fortune -- for more than 67 consecutive ratings periods. With an estimated 13 million viewers daily, Jeopardy! continues to attract an audience that outdelivers most of what airs on the networks in primetime.
