'Jeopardy!' champion
By Rodney Ho - Staff
Mark Dawson of Chamblee didn't just win on "Jeopardy" --- he was the ultimate winner. In the show taped in March and aired Friday, Dawson won $250,000 in the Tournament of Champions, the biggest "Jeopardy" jackpot ever.
"This is the kind of money that makes life easier if you use it correctly, but it's not the kind of money you can retire on," said Dawson, a business manager of an architecture firm who describes himself as "an even-keeled guy" (and sounds it). He says he'll keep his job, pay down his mortgage and travel. "It just gives me more freedom and peace of mind."
Dawson, 39 and unattached, says he managed to keep his win secret from co-workers, who gathered for parties to watch his progress this week. "It's too good a secret not to keep," he said.
To practice, Dawson made flashcards on topics like world capitals and books and authors and sat in on practices with the academic teams at Emory University and Georgia Tech. Competing against other winners who had mastered the fine art of handling the "Jeopardy" buzzer was "like a meat-grinder." But he kept his cool, and on Friday's finale, it all came down to Final Jeopardy: signers of the Declaration of Independence who shared a last name. (Who were Adams [John and Samuel], Lee [Francis and Richard\] and Morris [Robert and Lewis]?)
"Watching it," he said, "I just about broke down."
