Who Is.... Kathy Cassity
The Tryout & Call
I was about to turn 40, feeling like a fat frumpy housewife in dire need of pizzazz. One day while nursing my baby and watching Jeopardy, I saw an ad for a contestant search in Honolulu, and decided that would do the trick.
The rest fell into place with amazing ease. I was invited to the Hilton Hawaiian Village to try out two days after my 40th birthday, and I passed the test. Susanne said I could expect a call sometime within the next year; it came two weeks later. So much for study time! I did read up on presidents, Oscars, state nicknames and world capitals, just like they tell you to do, but other than that I was pretty much going to have to go with what I’d learned from studying, traveling, reading, living.
I was told later that the 50th state had been historically underrepresented, so that may have something to do with the swiftness of my call. Glenn also said the crew thought "closed captioner from Hawaii" would make a cool introduction, since they’d never had a captioner on the show before. So I can probably thank the uniqueness of both my profession and my locale for my nearly instantaneous success in landing a spot on the show. It couldn’t have been my brilliance; after announcing that I was an English major, I proceeded to mis-identify the location of A Farewell to Arms in my mock game.
As game day approached, I developed this mortal fear of screwing up on the things I am supposed to know best. From the day I got the call, I somehow knew I would miss a Shakespeare question, probably on a Daily Double. And even though my parents had passed away, I feared embarrassing them posthumously by messing up on Bible and geography. Finally, I worried I would miss questions within my scholarly field.... I definitely worried more about missing the things people would expect me to get. I wouldn’t care if I missed something on Heavyweight Boxing; you’re less likely to buzz in when you’re clueless, so at least you don’t usually lose money on those categories. The danger categories are the things you are supposed to know.
