Who Is.... Kathy Cassity
I’m a native of Seattle, now several times transplanted. My dad was a Boeing engineer, my mom a piano teacher. Both parents had a lifelong nightly habit of watching Jeopardy while playing Scrabble, so I got the bug early. My mom used to laugh at contestants who missed Bible questions, while my dad poked fun at people who missed on geography. (Note this for later.)
I married my high school boyfriend in ‘79, went to court reporting school, and became a freelance deposition reporter in 1982. In ‘89-90 we moved to London so I could work at the Old Bailey courthouse. When that gig was up, we chucked everything, bought a van and bummed around Europe for three months. Somewhere in the south of France, I had an epiphany and decided to change my boring life. We returned to Seattle, I cut back to part-time work and enrolled in the University of Washington. A year later, my husband got into grad school at University of Hawaii, so we moved to Honolulu and I transferred.
I earned my BA in English from UH in ‘94 and my MA in ‘97, started the doctoral program and began teaching college English part-time. Next I decided I was tired of working for lawyers, so I switched from court reporting to TV broadcast captioning–same machine, different application. Last summer we moved to Reno (a relocation that will prove short-lived). These days, I juggle raising a lively toddler with my home-based captioning business, Sundance Captions Inc., and a part-time teaching gig. I also do some writing and editing, and I often think about finishing my doctoral dissertation. I’m a bookworm, music lover and general culture vulture with a bad case of wanderlust–all in all, not a bad set of preparatory experiences for a would-be Jeopardy contestant, though I come up a little wanting in pop culture, science, and sports trivia.
